Media Smarts report, Experts or Amateurs? addresses the question of whether our youth are as tech savvy as we tend to believe.
In Cyberbullying: Dealing with Online Meanness and Cruelty Threats, Media Smarts indicates that Canadian youth face a range of mean and cruel online behaviours.
MindsetI recently watched Carol Dweck's presentation"On Being Perfect." In this 40 minute video, Carol Dweck eloquently shares her own personal experience as well as current research about Mindsets.
I have written a short blog post about part of her message. You can read more about Mindsets and subscribe to the monthly Mindsets Blog here. High School RedesignWelcome to the resource website for "Moving Forward with High School Re-Design". In the “Read and Watch” section, there are articles and videos that can provide an opportunity to shift thinking at your school/community. Contained in the “Putting it into Practice” are examples of how schools have taken the theory of Re-design and put it into practice at their schools

Jigsaw LearningKurtis and Lorna Hewson have been adding new items to their website:
A five minute video outlining the key elements of the Collaborative Response Model is now available. They have launched a new Google + Community, to allow schools to network, share resources, access word and google versions of templates and documents, as well as pose questions and generate discussion. Their January blog post, Embedding Time for Collaboration, contains a template for staff discussion, as well as links to share how you embed time in your school, as well as see responses from schools from all grade configurations. Project Based Learning, Inquiry Learning and Design Thinking
With an emphasis on implementing the shifts identified in "Inspiring Education," there has been a growing interest in rethinking the way we engage students in their learning. This month, please have a look at a sampling of some resources that support and explore Project Based Learning, Inquiry Learning and Design Thinking.
Calgary Science School (CSS) provides students in grades 4 to 9 with an enriched educational experience, infused with ubiquitous access to laptops, an exciting environmental and outdoor education program, and a safe and encouraging school culture in which to learn. CSS students are excited, engaged, and empowered.
The first goal in the CSS Charter is to engage students in relevant, inquiry-based experiences that honour the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge and understanding. The Calgary Science School has 600 students in grades 4-9. Connect! The Professional Learning Journal of the Calgary Science School Calgary Science School Charter Document The Galileo Educational Network is an independent, charitable organization that consists of thought-leading educators and a high profile Board of Directors. The Galileo Educational Network creates, promotes and disseminates innovative teaching and learning practices through research, professional learning and fostering external collaborations. Galileo works with students, teachers and policy makers across Canada both onsite and online. Galileo Educational Network click on the "Designing Learning" Menu for numerous resources that support Inquiry Based Learning |
Buck Institute for Education (BIE) was founded in
1987 as a not-for-profit organization. In the late 1990s, BIE began to focus
its work on Project Based Learning, In 1999 researcher John Thomas documented
his findings about effective PBL in the first edition of the Project Based learning Handbook
for Middle and High School Teachers. The Project Based Learning Handbook was revised in a second edition in
2003. The work of the Buck Institute continues to grow and is shared through their
online learning portal at http://www.bie.org/
Here is an interesting Video from Edutopia.org: An Introduction to Project Based Learning Maker Day Through a business and education partnership in British Columbia a debut Maker Day was held on November 2, 2013. Over 80 educators designed and tinkered to explore how ‘making’ can be added into their classrooms. Maker Day encourages a shift in learning, helping educators introduce trades and technology and working with your hands to students as young as five. Kainai High School is planning to host a Maker Day in January 2014. Watch for more information on how you can be a part of the day. See a Maker Day in action here. |

Digital CitizenshipEach new school year, students sign off on our Responsible Use Agreements for use of technology in Holy Spirit Schools. Becoming responsible citizens in a digital world is taught ongoing throughout the school year, but is highlighted especially at the beginning of the school year when teachers and students work together to develop common understandings and expectations for the use of technology for learning in our schools. Here are a few resources to assist with getting started:
|
"Inspirational Back to School Videos"
Here is yet another example of the power of Personal Learning Networks (PLN) on Twitter. Back at the beginning of August, Paul Walker tweeted George Couros asking for ideas for inspirational back to school videos. George Couros, in turn, tweeted the request out to his PLN. Within a few hours people began tweeting their responses. Sit back, relax and have a look at some of the suggestions below.

My Child's Learning: A Parent Resource
A new online tool for parents, My Child’s Learning: A Parent Resource, will provide you with information about what your child is learning in school and how he or she might be assessed for every subject or grade. You can also use the tool to explore online learning materials to help your child with his or her studies.
This new online tool replaces the printed Curriculum Handbooks for Parents and Curriculum Summaries. Putting this information online means you can get it more easily and no longer need to request the books from the school or the government.

Media Awareness Network
Media Awareness Network is pleased to announce the release of its new Diversity and Media Toolbox / Trousse éducative – diversité et médias. Freely available on MNet’s public website, in English and in French, the Toolboxreplaces MNet’s Exploring Media & Race and Deconstructing Online Hate programs that were previously available through a licensing arrangement. There are two programs in the Toolbox: That’s Not Me /Pour connaître et se reconnaître and Facing Online Hate / Faire face à la haine sur Internetare professional development workshops that are supported by new and updated lesson plans, interactive quizzes, articles and links to resources by leading media education and anti-racism organizations – including MNet’s own resources. They align with English Language Arts, Social Studies, Media Studies, Law, and Health curricula, as well as Anti-Racism and Conflict Resolution programs.
That’s Not Me expands on the topic of diversity representation in the media covered in MNet’s Exploring Media & Race workshop with updated content and an increased focus on media education. It also deals with a broader range of diversity including race, religion, sexual orientation, disability and Aboriginal portrayal.
Facing Online Hate looks at how the Internet is used to spread and incite hate and how parents, educators and community leaders can talk to youth about bias, stereotyping and hate in online content. A supporting guide, Responding to Online Hate / Réagir à la propagande haineuse sur Internet is an important tool in helping educators, police and community groups recognize hate on the Internet and understand how youth are targeted online and can become radicalized through hateful online content.

TED Talk by John Hunter
"World Peace Game"
John Hunter puts all the problems of the world on a 4'x5' plywood board -- and lets his 4th-graders solve them. At TED2011, he explains how his World Peace Game engages schoolkids, and why the complex lessons it teaches -- spontaneous, and always surprising -- go further than classroom lectures can. (20:28)
